James Madison University

The Theatre and Musical Theatre programs at JMU provide professionally focused training within the context of a broader university experience. As evidenced by the success of our graduates, this is a combination that produces uniquely qualified theatre and musical theatre practitioners.

Students study with a dedicated faculty who provide personal attention to each individual. We value the development of close working relationships between students and teachers. Speakers and guest artists regularly visit campus and have included casting directors, designers, choreographers, playwrights, directors, arts managers and performers. These working professionals teach master classes and conduct extended residencies. Periodically they serve as guest designers, directors, or choreographers. The School of Theatre and Dance has an exceptionally active production program with more than thirty different shows produced on the mainstage and in the studio spaces each year. The students who attend James Madison University are a dynamic and self-motivated group. In the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, students have the opportunity to work in five performance spaces with the latest technologies, and in state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, and shops.

An audition and/or interview are required for consideration for admission to the School of Theatre and Dance. Students work toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in theatre, musical theatre or dance. The majority of our graduates pursue careers in the performing arts, performing, designing, and producing shows on Broadway and Off-Broadway, at regional theatres and dance companies, as well as working in film and television, and teaching in secondary education and college settings.
