University of Virginia

In 1819, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and inaugurated a bold experiment – a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. Two centuries later, this vision is thriving. Across Grounds - and throughout the world - UVA students, faculty, staff and alumni challenge convention, break barriers and pursue the greater good. The Department of Drama offers a 33 credit-hour undergraduate major leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree within the College of Arts & Sciences, a 16 credit-hour minor in Drama, and an 18 credit-hour minor in Dance. Even before becoming a major, however, a student may be an active participant in all the production activities of the Department and may enroll in any of several classes. The Department of Drama produces three to four mainstage productions each year, plus a New Works Festival, various readings and lab shows, and two dance concerts.  In the summers, we are home to the Heritage Theatre Festival, a professional theatre that produces four shows each year. UVA Drama is home to three performance venues: the Culbreth Theatre, a 520-seat proscenium theatre; the Ruth Caplin Theatre, a 300-seat thrust theatre; and the Helms Theatre, a flexible capacity black-box theatre.
